I think Win98 gives some special problems with external drivers. It's 16-bit and all other Win releases were 32-bit. If you even had Win95, it would be possible to download an NT version of the driver and have a 50/50 chance it would work. All you can do is try. And, HP brand is the printers that usually worked through all my hardware upgrades. Try a web search, if that doesn't work, try tech support with HP.

I would go with a HP 1350 all in one, it has everything you need a copier, scanner, and printer! I have never had problems with it, and my family members have purchased them to!

I think ALL the printer companies do this. The printer polls the chip regularly. When it is empty it sends a signal to the chip. Unless you use a chip resetter, refilling won't work. Anyway, refilling is a dangerous practice. It may work a few times but the one time it fails will cost you more than anything you saved. Look at for details.
Using new compatible cartridges is a good way to save money. Someone I know brought their Canon printer to the authorized Canon repair center. When they picked it up, the tech wanted to demonstrate that it worked but it was out of ink. He put in new cartridges and the person noticed they were NOT Canon! He asked the tech why they were using non-Canon cartridges and he answered they worked just as well and were cheaper.

I think What I did for my wedding invitations was I printed the wording on a regular sheet of paper, found some nice cardstock on clearance at an office supply store and copied it on at Kinkos. I think I spent less than $40 altogether for 100 invitations.

The printer heads may need to be cleaned and there should be a setting to do that.
The ink could be bad, where are you buying it?
Does it print just black if you ask it to?

Try cleaning the print heads.
